What happens when a museum accepts an object?

Here's how the professional review and acquisition works – transparent and documented.

1

Does the object suit us?

An object is offered to the museum for purchase, donation or bequest. The museum first checks whether it fits its collection and the institution's mission.

2

Where does it come from?

For most objects, the origin is clear and straightforward. In rare cases – suspected theft or illegal trade – international databases help with verification.

3

Is ownership permitted?

Usually no problem. Only certain exceptions such as protected species or cultural property from conflict zones are subject to special legal regulations.

4

The decision

Curators, lawyers and management discuss the case and make a joint documented decision. For clear cases, this goes quickly.

5

Acquisition into the collection

The object receives an inventory number, is photographed and fully recorded in the database – with dimensions, material, age and provenance.

6

Everything is archived

Contracts and transfer documents are permanently stored. The object is now officially part of the museum's collection.
